They open with Jack Straw again and again it is another winner - what can you say again? it is just one of their best songs. maybe that was '84) Greek Theatre UC Berkeley. they would next appear in an upside down, feel-good, raging three show run at the eucalyptus and. His was the last show of the Spring East Coast for the Grateful Dead. That's too bad since there was so much promise for "stellardom" with the first set and the beginning of the second. The second started well enough but, The Boyz just didn't finish me off by putting a sonic stake through my heart. Having Stella > R&R as an ending don't help much. I wish Truckin' was a little more developed and exploratory. This is a tough show to gage at giving a four or five star rating. Could anybody get a clarification on this?Īnd really, could you get any wackier with that Raven Space? As long as I rotate a few hundred shows and hear it maybe once ever few years or so for laughs. I'm surprised at the labeling of this source at only "AUD" and not FOB? Sure sounds like one to me. Cumberland is superb (and only four done the whole year out of 61 shows.jeez.) And I LOVE the On The Road Again - Peggy'O - Cassidy troica. Jack Straw starts things out strong with a good TLEO to follow. I've always liked 4.17 and 4.18 but, my-oh-my, April '82 is starting to rival some of the legendary periods we all highly-salami to. I'm really impressed with how many good April '82 audience shows are coming up on this site. I mean, it's really, REALLY clear - the vocals are crystalline to a point where every single tiny enunciation from Bobby and especially Jerry can be heard, and listen to Phil croak into that mic before his laughing madness 's just weird to hear it so **up-front**, and with such a lack of surrounding audience noise - sometimes this puts me off from the first set, where the band doesn't seem to be getting a lot of feedback save Cumberland. One note on this recording: it's something else, let me tell you. Of course, the big news here is all that raven stuff from Phil, which is absolutely a must-hear.anyone know of any other instances, besides Hartford the night before, where Phil or someone else went this sort of mad direction? And don't discard Jer's lovely post-Space ballads - Wheel and Stella are played so beautifully - particularly the former, as they hadn't quite started to double-time it like they did ad infinitum in the mid-80s. Listen to how Bobby tries to get things going on Stranger, god love him, and through Estimated.
Not really feeling this first set overall (save that firecracker Cumberland!), but that 2nd really is something special - there are times when they're working pure magic. One of the most fun evenings of my entire life. It was a love-fest for a while, and then really rocked out on the Franklin/Estimated/Station - well, you know the rest. They Love Each Other, Peggy-O were great to hear. This was my second year of seeing the Dead, and maybe the best show I ever saw. Nobody onboard but a few deadheads, and one of em looks at me and yells "HEY! I sold you pot!" And he had, too, several months earlier. On the way home, my sister and I grabbed a bus near Mt. Then Bobby looked up at us (I mean, me) and said "Be careful up there." We went nuts. We are all just swaying to the music while standing at the railing, and being as careful as we can considering the situation.
And I'm wearing this sheet like a cape and swaying back and forth, along with a dozen strangers, I mean lifelong friends. The sheet had been tied to the railing of the upper deck. It's the end of the show, and I steal (I am SO SO Sorry!) a bedsheet with the Steal Your Face painted on it. So there I am in the upper section at the truly brokedown 'palace' that was the Baltimore Civic Center. If it doesn't have the encore, here's one thing you'll miss: If that's true, then it's a major bummer as this is a clean sounding audience tape. The setlist makes it look like the encore, Brokedown Palace, isn't here.
